In the fifth round of Group F of the European Group Stage of the World Cup preliminaries, Portugal lost 0-2 to Ireland. Cristiano Ronaldo was sent off for an elbow. In the final round of the World Cup preliminaries, Portugal will play Armenia at home and Cristiano Ronaldo will be suspended.
BBC reporter Dale Johnson posted:
Ronaldo was sent off after a VAR review for violent behavior. He will miss Portugal's first game in the 2026 World Cup.
He should be suspended for 2 games. Assuming Portugal goes straight to the World Cup, these 2 games will be executed in the final round of the world qualifying match against Armenia and the first game of the World Cup group stage.
In international competitions, players will only be automatically suspended for 1 game, and any additional penalties will be decided by the disciplinary committee. Unlike English football, there is no automatic three-match suspension for violent conduct.
